Blog Post 4: My language journey
Throughout my studies, I have managed to gain a significantly greater understanding of the English language. English is something I began studying at an early age, and even then, I understood its importance for both my education and my future. As English is widely spoken around the world and often serves as a common language between people from different countries, I realized early on that investing time and effort into learning it would be beneficial. Looking back, I can confidently say that this is a decision I do not regret, as my dedication to improving my English skills has opened many academic and personal opportunities.
A major step in strengthening my English skills took place during my high school years in Greece, where I participated in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The IB program places strong emphasis on English, as it is the primary language of instruction across most subjects. This experience was particularly valuable because it allowed me to move beyond textbook learning and apply the language in more realistic and academic contexts. Through essays, presentations, and discussions conducted in English, I became more comfortable expressing complex ideas and arguments, which greatly improved both my written and spoken communication skills.
The next and perhaps most important stage in my language development was attending university. At university, English became the main language I used to communicate with peers, instructors, and academic material. This constant exposure helped me further develop confidence and fluency. In addition, I learned how to apply my language skills directly to my field of study. I became more familiar with academic vocabulary, discipline-specific terminology, and appropriate ways of discussing complex topics in English. This not only improved my communication but also strengthened my overall academic performance.
In conclusion, my journey with the English language has been gradual but highly rewarding. From early studies, through the IB program, and into university life, each stage has contributed to my growth and confidence. English has become an essential tool that supports my academic progress and prepares me for future professional opportunities. I now view my language skills not only as an achievement but as a foundation for continued learning and personal development.
